How do I prepare for an interview in South Africa?
If you're reading this blog, it means you likely got an interview and you're looking for tips to ace it. Congratulations!!!. Even if you just want to prepare for a future interview that can come, you're at the right place. This is the first step to getting yourself that dream job you've always wanted. Whether you're a first-time job seeker or an experienced professional, we all need a bit of help sometimes. Below I've shared 5 tips to get you ready to nail that interview.
Dealing with nerves
Interviewing can be nerve-racking, especially for first-time job seekers and new grads. Do not panic; this is normal, and it happens to the best of us. The first thing you want to do is to relax and take it as a casual conversation with a friend or a family member. This does not mean you should be unprofessional; it's just a way to help your brain calm down.
Be prepared for interview questions
The best tip for any occasion is to be prepared. There are three ways that can help you prepare for any question that you may face.
- Research—The first thing you should do after getting that interview slot is to go and get as much information about the company as you can get. The first place to start is their website. Know all the services they offer, what they specialize in, what your role might look like, how you can fit in, understand the organization’s goals and values, and any information that can be useful. Another place is their social media; this can give you a glimpse of how they operate and the working culture.
- Know your story—The interviewer will likely start by asking you, "Tell me about yourself" or something close to that. Tell a story about yourself, your experiences, and your ambitions; know yourself, and show your personality. One thing you don't want to do is memorize your answers; it sounds robotic and does not capture the interviewer's attention, but take time to prepare
- Do mock interview questions—for most big organizations, their interview questions are already posted online on forums and job websites; a 5-minute search might result in a gold mine of questions. Even if they're not posted online, you can still use commonly asked interview questions. Most companies use the same questions; there are a lot of guides out there on how to answer interview questions. Things to not look down on
Something as small as arriving 30 minutes early can go a long way in making that first impression meaningful and looking good. I'll go as far as wear your best professional outfit, the emphasis being on 'professional.' If you're doing any presentation of a portfolio or any additional documentation, prepare these before your interview. Always carry a copy of your CV with you in a bag.
Lastly, be confident. Remember, you're prepared. you have prepared for this exact moment. You got this interview because you're qualified; now show them how you can be a valuable employee that can immense contributions.
GOOD LUCK!!!
